Encaustic artwork is about melting wax colour and applying this paint medium to a surface, so you need heated tools or melted wax. You can also scrape, scratch and carve the wax once it has been applied. There are many modern electrically powered tools available to buy and lots of domestic appliances to adapt.
But be warned, playing about with heat and electricity is dangerous, so please do not attempt to alter or adapt anything electrical unless you are certain of your competence to do so in safety.

Many tools are useful in the working of molten wax.

Basically anything that gets warm enough to melt the waxes can be utilised, but be careful not to use heating devices that reach high temperatures. The waxes melt at around 65 degrees celcius so temperatures need never exceed about 90°C.

Domestic irons, food warming trays, hot air guns, hair dryers, skillets, temperature controllable soldering irons are amongst some of the useful things that you may already have lying around.
As a basic guide - if the wax smokes then the tools are getting too hot!
