the wax surface of encaustic art wax block colours is fragile when compared to other paint media, like acrylic for instance. the wax surface can be scratched or abraded by careless handling or even scratching with a finger nail.


sealer is available to create a false tougher acrylic surface & this is a good option for greetings cards that will be sent through the post & then handled. spraying on hair lacquer can help protect in this manner too.


larger artworks are best left in their natural wax form whenever possible. this way the wax can always be re-polished or re-worked if desired. once framed, encaustic art surfaces are protected by the glass, the only thing to watch out for then is direct sunlight, which can be absorbed by the wax, especially the darker areas, to a point where it can re-melt. so keep images safe by placing in plastic or poly-propylene sleeves if you need to store them.
