impasto work must be done onto a rigid surface in order to create a stable base that will avoid any cracking or flaking of the wax in the long term. MDF board, plywood, block-board or similar man made substrates are good. To avoid over absorption an initial sealing with about 30% white wood glue mixed with 70% water will help seal the surface. Too much sealing could weaken the key, so explore to find what suits the particular board you are using.


this piece was created with a mixture of brushing on molten wax, dribbling on wax colours, scraping through the waxes and so on.
