There have also been a number of discussions concerning the classification of encaustic techniques - What is "encaustic" and what is a kind of "combination technique using wax medium" - a question for art historians or theoretics. The original authentic encaustic method used only beeswax, resin and pigment combinations without any other additions. The mixture was melted and burned-in to the painting support. Today in a more general definition, encaustic art is art work that is rendered with a wax paint that has been processed with heat at some stage in the creative process, to manipulate the image and to fuse the wax paint within itself and to the support. According to the second definition my wax paintings are encaustic. One warning at the end: wax fumes at higher
temperatures are toxic and combustible ! Further illustration photos |
